PR Crisis Management – Tell It All, Tell It Fast And Tell The Truth

I turned on the television news recently to learn that one of our top football teams may have lost an important match because of illness, the story being brought to us by a reporter stationed outside the hotel where the players enjoyed lunch prior to the game.

In the car, this was the lead story on the radio news with the story read by a reporter, again said to be outside the hotel. He confirmed that the Police had collected samples from the restaurant to pass onto the health authorities.

Guess what? The story was also the lead in the tabloid newspapers sat on my desk when I reached the office. Photographs of the hotel in question usually supported the story.

As a public relations professional, I reflected on what the hotel's PR people are going through this morning. This is a prestigious hotel group with a well-crafted brand image of quality at the premium end of the market. Here they are, in the spotlight for all the wrong sort of reasons!

They will certainly have a documented Crisis Management Plan or, in softer terms, a PR Communications Plan. But it is not only global companies who need to devise a plan in advance. Being in business, or even running a not-for-profit organization, poses everyone to the risk of a PR crisis.

No organization is very far from crises and their resulting media attention. Their reputation can be washed away or seriously damaged in an instant. A crisis is any situation that threaten the integrity or reputation of your company, usually bought on by adverse or negative media attention.

These situations can be any kind of legal dispute, theft, accident, fire, flood or manmade disaster that could be attributed to your company. It can also be a situation where in the eyes of the media or general public your company did not react to one of the above situations in the appropriate manner. This definition is not all encompassing but rather is designed to give you an idea for the types of situations where you may need to follow this plan.

Crisis management is a complex subject, but here are five tips to get you started. And, start, you must.

1. Do not wait. Many organizations only get their crisis plans under once a disaster has stuck. Instead, brainstorm possible scenarios or types of disasters that could happen, and start planning for them. In fact, I have found this to be a positive process as bringing together key executives to share ideas and examine scenarios often bringing out a range of issues that they can take forward.

2. Realize that crises take a wide range of shapes. As I say, this can be anything from the hotel's crisis to a legal dispute getting out of hand to customer dissatisfaction aired on the Internet. I even recall a weekend phone call from a Scout leader who campsite had been washed away in storms with some children being injured; The media were on the telephone badgering her for the story! They will all require slightly different responses. Brainstorm and prepare for as many as you can imagine.

3. Develop a PR communications plan. A barrage of media attention may swamp you within minutes of the news breaking. Also, think about how you will get information out to staff, supporters & investors, and customers – yes, remember to get your side of the story out to customers as soon as you can. Internal communication is as important as communication to the general public.

A physical plan has to do with getting everyone out of the building in case of an earthquake. A communications plan involves identifying a spokesperson, developing press releases, setting up a media hotline, and finding a place where you can have a press conference.

4. Be prepared to speak to the media and to your constituents. Even if you can not say much because your lawyer is concerned about liability, plan to say what you can as soon as you can. Be concerned, show concern, speak concern, and always tell the truth. That does not mean you have to tell everything all at once, but never, never lie.

5. Provide media training for senior management. Do this before a disaster strikes. Make it a regular part of board and senior employee training. Media training need not cost a lot if you have someone on your board working in public relations or someone who is a member of the media. The key is to do it regularly so that new people are always trained and others do not grow stale.

Do not delay your crisis planning. Do not ruin your hard-won reputation by handling situations badly! The directors and PR team of that hotel this morning went to bed last evening little knowing the blast of unwelcome publicity that was facing them this morning. Hopefully, their PR Communications Plan will be a trusted aide today!

"I need an athlete who can lose his final college match making it his only loss during his high school and college career. Dominating fashion and then go on to become one of the greatest wrestling coaches in collegiate history. " So God made a wrestler.

God said, "I need an athlete who is willing to shoot a million low single legs in his lifetime and perform a leg lace fifty times a day because he knows the value of drilling." So He made a wrestler.

God had to have someone who could get pinned one week and then defeat that same opponent the following week to win the conference championship because he believed in himself and in his abilities. So God made a wrestler.

God said, "I need an athlete who is willing to work hard for four years and never regret it even though he never makes the varsity team. " So He made a wrestler.

"I need an athlete who is willing to practice three times a day preparing for the NCAA Tournament because his coach thinks that is what is needed to be prepared. Regular wrestling practice because his coach thinks that will give him the edge going into the NCAA Tournament. " So God made a wrestler.

God said, "I need an athlete that can be undefeated for thirteen years of international competition and then lose a match with the whole world watching and yet still be a gentleman and shake his opponent's hand." So God made a wrestler.

"I need an athlete who can face a man that has not lost a match in thirteen years and yet feel up to the challenge and never doub himself." So He made a wrestler.

"I need an athlete who can become a seven time world champion and a three time Olympic gold medal winner becoming one of the best in his sport of all time." So God made a wrestler.

God needed an athlete who would run wind sprints until his lungs burned and his legs ached. He needed that same person to do push-ups until his arms could no longer lift his body up for even one more repetition. God needed an athlete willing to work to the point of utter exhaustion. So He made a wrestler.

God said, "I need an athlete who is willing to turn down a candy bar or a cheeseburger because he needs to make weight the next day. In peak condition, even though he'd much more eat pizza and drink soda pop. " So He made a wrestler.

"I need an athlete who can work twelve hour days at a summer job and still still make practicing and working out a priority." So He made a wrestler.

God needed an athlete to practice his skills, lift weights, run, eat healthy, strive for perfection, overcome defeat, show good sportsmanship, toil, sweat, bleed, and sometimes even cry. So God made a wrestler.

God said, "I need an athlete who develops the character, values, self-discipline, and work ethic that will be with him even after his days of competition are over." So God made a wrestler.

The latest trend in wedding photography is toward a more fashionable approach. Inspired on high-end fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, GQ, American Photo, etc., and wedding magazines the photographer seeks to make the couple’s fantasies real.

In the fashion wedding photography approach the goal is to make the wedding couple look their best. Their romantic interplay is glamorized to its maximum expression. The everyday couple becomes like wedding celebrities. Attention to detail is required to achieve the perfect look. This approach requires a great deal of artistic talent behind the camera and also great computer image editing skill to produce a unique photo. Half the photo is made on the camera with the second half achieved though digital image editing and manipulation.

Which style is best, is for you to decide. In our experience a big segment of the wedding couples want to capture the reality, details and romance of the wedding day but at the same time they have fantasies about their wedding and the way they should look.

When making a decision for a wedding photographer look closely to the photographer’s portfolio and see how it agrees with your philosophy on how your wedding day should be photographed. Regardless of your philosophy please make sure that you select a master of the craft, you and the next generation deserve masterpiece memories of your wedding day.

Outsourcing – Pros And Cons

Stripped of its technical terms, outsourcing is basically the practice of one company to contract another company to provide the services that could have been performed by their own staff. There are many reasons why companies now are on the bandwagon of having some of their services done by others. (It had been an old practice, really.) These outsourced services passed on to other companies are usually call center services, e-mail services, and payroll. These particular jobs are part of the outsourcing trend practiced by many companies these days.


One of the main reasons why companies are into outsourcing is diminished company resources, both in financial terms and in manpower costs. When a company expands (which can be sudden), the growth can start to eat up on the companies resources.

Financially, the company might not be able to match the growth with the needed infusion of money to sustain the expansion. This holds true with their human resources as well.

With the growth, manpower might be sucked up with the new growth and diminish the company’s productivity in its core areas. The service-providing companies can do the work for less costs (thus not over-stretching most of the company’s resources), and has the manpower to do it.

Other Reasons

Efficiency sometimes suffers once there is a sudden expansion that cannot be absorbed by the company’s present staff setup and other resources. If, for instance, there is a huge demand for huge number of their products, other departments might not be up to it.

The purchasing department might need so many men to do the buying of raw materials, for instance. Outsourcing the purchasing department is a good move and costs less.

Other reasons could be that overhead costs might be disastrous to the company’s budget and current plans. Or, perhaps an offshoot to its growth is impossible to meet. If the company had grown to such an extent that it needs a bigger office, outsourcing the functions of the projected new additional staff is cheaper. (Transfer of the whole office to someplace bigger is definitely expensive in time, effort and money values.)

Companies are also bound to experience production demands that come and go in cycles within a year. Outsourcing additional resources during times of so much demand can ease up the company’s problems.

The good part of the deal is that the contracted periods of having these extra jobs outsourced can follow the cyclical production demands. (A toy company’s production department might need more manpower in the middle months of the year to produce the goods needed for, say, Christmas or some holidays.)


On the other hand, this new business model of parceling some important work aspects of a company to another had sparked a mini-controversy which had not been thoroughly resolved even until now. Definitely, there are those who are not fully convinced of the viability of such an arrangement.

The biggest argument against this deal is actually focused on the relationship of the company and its clients. In short, it may invite dissatisfaction from client side. Reasons could range from lower quality of work output, unnecessary dilution of company-client trade secrets, etc.


Control is also put to the test. Some aspects of the company are in danger of spinning out of the company’s control since the outsourced company conducts the decisions that would have been better handled by the parent company.

Some clients are not fully convinced that the outsourced company can function as efficiently as the original contracted company. If they do (most companies can, in practice), clients feel it might be better to deal with the new company rather than their old supplier or contracted business partner.

Riding on this threat is the mounting danger of delayed communications that causes delayed implementation. Without proper management and apportioning of responsibilities, there is tendency that confusion might set in.

Outsourcing had also allowed a political issue to float around – social responsibility. It is said that with more and more companies allocating jobs to foreign countries, the people of the parent company will have reduced opportunities. While this debate and questions are still up in the air, more and more companies are outsourcing some of their work. Offhand, companies and their managers think the current trend is the result of the current situation in commerce and trade all over the world. At the moment, outsourcing looks like it will stay for a while.

Quantum Computing and Healthcare Technology

In a recent news release IBM declared that they are very close to make a breakthrough in the realms of Quantum computing. As a result of some experimental successes they are closer to build the first Quantum Computer, that can take advantage of the oddities of quantum physics and could solve certain problems in seconds, that would otherwise take present-day computers billions of years to solve.

Quantum computing is a computing system based on qubits as opposed to bits; where qubits (Quantum Bits) are basic units of information in a quantum computer. While a bit can represent just one of two possibilities such as 0 or 1, or yes or not, Qubits can represent many more options: 0 or 1, 1 and 0, the occurrence of multiple combinations of Qubits, and that too simultaneously. So, Qubit represents an array of possibilities and all can be calculated simultaneously taking probabilities in account.

The Qubit concept deals with very small particles (subatomic particles). It has been proven that a subatomic particle can have different states simultaneously because the particles are never static. This is evident because they move very fast, close to the speed of light. So, a particle state of the particle (Qubit) looks different to different observers and the particle has several states simultaneously. That is why one subatomic particle can have different states and probabilities, at the same time. We can use it to replace bits and get better performance: Much better performance! And then, when you combine Qubits, that combination holds an exponentially larger amount of information than bits. Subatomic logic is much more powerful than binary logic used in normal computing.

As a result, you can process complicated information faster. Its main applications are encryption, decryption, modeling, databases, voice recognition, structure recognition, simulation and artificial intelligence, plus many others yet non-existent applications.

Imagine its utilization and effect in the realm of Healthcare, specifically e-Health. Volumes of electronically available Patient data, structured, modeled, simulated, and processed in fractions of seconds – artificial intelligence for diagnosis and condition predictability with almost 100% accuracy, will multiply millions of fold, surpassing unthought-of limits.

Quantum Computing has also proved that two entangled particles share its existence. That is when one modifies its state, the other also modifies its own state simultaneously, no matter how far they are in the universe. That means we can “transport” information from one place to another without physical movement, just by modifying one entangled particle state.

In e-Health, this could mean automatic remote and reliable diagnosis, with electronic patient information, through immediate communication with entangled subatomic particles. And, with nano-scale precision applications, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

How to Do a Background Check?

A background check on a nanny includes an array of components. During your initial interview, ask to see your applicant’s photo identification; and record her name, address, birth date, social security number, phone number and driver’s license number. Confirm the information through an online people search website such as U.S. Search for People Data. Also, have her complete an I-9 form, and then use the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services E-Verify to see if she is legally eligible to work in our country.

Speak to formal and informal references, including former employers and people who have observed her work (please see the list of questions to ask below). If you desire your nanny to have a certain educational attainment, request a copy of her transcripts and contact the school she attended. Verify a claim of licensure with the appropriate licensing body. A social media search is also advisable, as it can turn up red flags.

Request that your applicant sign a form that will give you permission to see her personal information. Check the sex offender registry and child abuse records, in addition to civil, criminal and motor vehicle records. You may also want to see her credit report because financial troubles may indicate she has significant stress in her life.

What Questions to Ask References?

Some background-check services will interview references, but regardless of whether you use them, speak with former employers yourself because they are a valuable source of information. A criminal record is a compilation of local, state and federal information regarding a person’s law violations. This list contains past arrests and warrants, as well as current, dismissed and acquitted charges. Taxonomic Kingdom of Ball Pythons

Taxonomy is the system used by scientists to classify living organisms into similar or related groups. As science and technology progress and information increases, so do the methods used to deter¬mine relationships among organisms. DNA analysis, something that was unavailable years ago, is now more commonly used to determine how living organisms are relat¬ed to one another. Earlier methods for clas-sifying snakes that are still used today include scale counts, bone structure, and other anatomical characteristics. These methods can be confusing, because we don’t usually know what characteristics developed first or which ones are truly the most important in determining relationships. The advent of DNA analysis allows much greater accuracy in classification.

All living organisms have two names: the common name and the scientific name. Common names are the familiar, everyday names of living things, such as dog, leopard gecko, and ball python. Scientific names are written in Latinized form-some of the names are truly Latin while others are Latin versions of words from other languages. Most early scientific texts were written in Latin, and because of this, when a species was named, the Latin language was used. The continued use of Latin persists, since this provides for continuity among various scientific texts and journals. Regardless of which country you live in or which language you speak, the scientific or Latin name for a specific plant or animal will always be the same.

Ball pythons belong to the family Pythonidae, although some authorities consider this a subfamily of Boidae, the boas. This family is further broken down into eight genera (the plural of genus; genus is the level of classification just above species): Antaresia (dwarf Australian pythons), Aspidites (black-headed pythons and woma pythons), Bothrochilus (Bismarck ringed python), Leiopython (white-lipped python), Liasis (olive, Macklot’s, water pythons, and relatives), Apodora (Papuan python), Morelia (carpet, diamond, green tree, Boelen’s, and amethystine pythons), and Python (Burmese, blood, rock, reticulated, and simi¬lar species). Ball pythons belong to the genus Python, which also contains the largest of the world’s python species. The other members of Python are the reticulated, African rock, Timor, blood, Indian (including the Burmese subspecies), and Angolan pythons. The Angolan python (P. anchietae) is the ball python’s closest relative. The ball python is the smallest member of this genus, rarely exceeding 6.5 feet (2 m) in total length.

The ball python’s scientific name is Python regius. Literally translated, it means “royal python.” (In Europe, P. regius is known as the royal python, while in America it is called the ball python.) It is possible that this small python received its scientific name in part because of the number of African tribes that worshipped it. In many areas of Africa, the snake is still considered a sacred animal. In some older literature, P. regius is referred to as the regal python.
